Pocket Pet Care

Pocket Pet Care in Shippensburg, PA

We Use Equipment Designed Specifically for Tiny Critters

Pocket pets are named as such because animals, such as rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, gerbils, and chinchillas are often small enough to fit in your pocket or your lap. While many people think that pocket pets are easy to care for—thinking they just need a comfortable cage, food, and water—they still require ongoing veterinary care in addition to appropriate nutrition, human interaction, and proper cleaning of their cages.

Annual Examinations for Pocket Pets

If you have a pocket pet, it’s of vital importance that you bring him or her in for an examination at least once a year. Unfortunately, pocket pets do not typically have long lifespans, which means that any age-related problem can develop in a matter of months. In order to prevent, diagnose, or treat any illness, regular veterinary check-ups are required.

During these annual examinations, our experienced veterinarians will:

  • Perform a physical examination of your tiny friend
  • Administer any parasite treatment and control
  • Perform any required diagnostic testing, such as x-rays, blood tests, skin scrapings, and growth biopsy
  • Prescribe any necessary medications or supplements your pocket pet requires

One of the reasons why it is so important for you to bring in any pocket pets for annual examinations is because they are so good at hiding any signs or symptoms of illness. During the annual examination, our veterinarians screen for signs and symptoms that many pet owners don’t notice or cannot see.

However, if you notice your pet exhibiting any of the following symptoms, call us right away:

  • Flaky skin
  • Hair loss
  • Lumps or bumps
  • Extreme inactivity
  • Loose stools
  • Decreased appetite
  • Discharge coming from his or her mouth, eyes, or nose
