Shippensburg Animal Hospital was founded in 1949 by Dr. Lyle Baker, a dairy specialist from Cornell University. The veterinary practice grew rapidly due to the growing need for treatments for problems that affected dairy cattle. Just two years later following a car accident, Dr. Baker decided to move to sunny California. He sold the practice to Dr. John W. Fague, a graduate of the School of Veterinary Medicine at Pennsylvania University in Philadelphia, PA. To accommodate his growing family and expanding small animal practice, in 1953 Dr. Fague relocated the clinic. They said goodbye to the corner of Spring House Street and North Fayette Street and set up shop on the corner of Lurgen Avenue and School House Lane. Dr. Fague built a house where his family would reside upstairs, and the office and animal practice would operate on the lower level; the ideal commute for Dr. Fague. In 1969, Dr. Fague closed his dairy practice to devote his attention full-time to his small animal friends.

In 1988, during at a picnic at Dr. Fague’s home, Dr. John Stoner, expressed interest in buying Dr. Fague’s practice. In July the following year, the Cornell graduate, who owned another animal practice at Mt. Rock, became owner of Shippensburg Animal Hospital. Through the 90’s we continued to grow, adding doctors and incorporating in 1999. In 2004 we opened the Allen Road office after recognizing a need to better serve our clients in the Carlisle and Newville areas. In 2008 we embarked on a major new addition and remodeling of the Mt. Rock office, adding a treatment area, second kennel, a third exam room, a new surgical area, a garage and large animal office area. We have now grown to a seven-doctor practice serving the entire Cumberland Valley from our three locations.

Our Mission

To be there for our clients by providing unparalleled medical care in an atmosphere of uncompromising compassion so our patients live long and healthy lives.

“I have used several vets over the years and by far this has been the best yet. Everyone at the facility has always been so nice and understanding. I know to work at a vet clinic that you “should” have a love of animals; however, at this clinic the entire staff goes above and beyond to make you and your four-legged family member feel good.”
